Words can either hurt or heal

Remember this childhood rhyme: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. Some of us used to say this little one-liner of a rhyme when growing up to prove to the bully that their words had no power and those negative words that were thrown at us can never hurt us. WOW, how wrong!

How many times have you heard the words “you are stupid”, “you are so dumb”, “you can’t do anything right”, “you are a waste of space”, or better yet how many times have we told our children these same words? These very hurtful words become engrained in their hearts and spirits and eventually our children will believe these daunting words and soon after live out these words.

Did you know that emotional abuse can be one of the most deadliest forms of abuse? However, societies around the world have made us believe that physical abuse is the most harmful of all of the types of abuses a person can suffer from.  They have also implied that physical abuse is the only type of abuse that can cause victims their lives. Well, I say that they are wrong! Emotional/verbal abuse within itself can be the silent killer of all of the forms of abuse? Why? It is so subtle and the effects are not easily seen at first but over time, the effects can be deadly because the negative words spoken to someone are being engrained into their heart and spirit which is the silent killer.

When victims of verbal abuse are subjected to this type of abuse, the individual silently submits to the voices of rejection, doubt, fear, intimidation and so on.

These words that are spoken over and over again to the victim can eventually become a part of their core beliefs. To simply put it: Whatever a person believes they become and begin to live out. They become the very negative words that were once spoken over them.

If these negative words are believed by the victim they can, in turn, pass this same thought process and negativity to their children, especially if the children are subject to this type of abuse as well.  Thus repeating the cycle of verbal abuse to the next generation.

Try this simple yet effective exercise if you have been a victim of such abuse: start out by speaking positive words over your life and your children’s life 3 times a day for one whole month. While doing this, you must fight the urge to speak any negative over your life. Here are some words you can speak to help you get started:

·        I am smart and intelligent
·        I am beautiful
·        My life has meaning
·        I have a purpose in life
·        I am wanted
·        I am loved

Feel free to continue adding only positive phrases to this list and watch how your life will be transformed right before your very eyes. You will soon believe what you say and you will become the words that you speak over yourself. In the end, this will become a habit of speaking positive things. The key here is to be consistent…don't stop!

Also, an individual who has been subject to this type of abuse is strongly encouraged to seek counseling along with their children. Counseling will assist the individual develop a more positive self-worth and combat the effects of this type of abuse.

Is This You?

Is This You? I wrote an article a few days ago about the  signs of spiritual abuse  and how to recognize this type of abuse within a church. After the article was written, I was asked by someone to talk about the effects of this type of abuse because they had a friend that was still struggling with the effects of spiritual abuse. Also some people are still trying to say that this abuse is not real and that there could not possibly be any effects to such a thing. Over the past 17 years as a social worker, I have worked with many victims who have experienced all types of horrific forms of abuse; from child abuse victims to sexual abuse victims, elderly abuse, domestic violence victims, victims of assaults, human trafficking, etc. You name it; I have pretty much worked with them. Either I have counseled them; conducted support groups for them or helped them find valuable resources. Basically my job as a social worker was to help each victim begin the painful ...

Which One Are You?

The other day I ran across one of my old 2010 journals. While reading some of the things I wrote my eye caught a particular journal entry. It was an entry for the month of August 2010. In that month of the August journal entry, I wrote about David and his son Solomon; a passage in the Bible from I Chronicles chapters 22 and 28 . I was encouraged to share this journal entry from 2010 with my readers at this specific time. To describe what I was hearing in my spirit I first must give a quick overview of what was going on in chapter 28 . During that time David had called a meeting with all of the most important people in Israel. David then stood up and made an announcement to the people that he had wanted to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and he had begun to make plans to start building this mighty temple. But then he told the people that God told him that he could not build this temple due to the fact that David was a man of war and has shed bloo...

Power

Where are you getting your power from? Have you ever been around someone or a group of people for a period of time and when you went home you were completely exhausted and did not know why.  I recently had a family function and you can imagine how draining family can be sometimes. Just the idea of going to this function made me tired. To my surprise, after attending the event, I was surprised that I felt great. I was not tired or drained at all. I asked myself what was different about this family function for me not to be so drained and exhausted…nothing. Everyone was still themselves. They had not changed at all.  I realized that the night before my best friend challenged my thinking. She told me that if I go to the function thinking that it would not go well then it will not go well. I had spent days rehearsing how bad the family function would be and didn't even realize it. I played the negative thoughts in my head over and over again. By doing that, I bec...
